Care & Maintenance

Ultra Durable Braided Slims Luxuria Doubled Sided Braided Rugs

Braiding, a form of the ancient art of weaving, dates back to Roman times. Some speculate that the early colonial settlers introduced braiding to rugs, but, Native American rug weaving techniques may have been the basis for the design. Evidence indicates that early settlers, attracted by the weaving technique and colorful displays in blankets, ponchos and ceremonial rugs, wanted to recreate their own rugs using with this technique.

One thing is certain. The early colonists in New England could not afford to import wool rugs from Europe, and needed something to keep their floors warm. By the late 1700's, they were using braided straw mats to cover their wooden floors.

In the early 1800’s, the colonies began to weave their own wool. Women settlers replaced straw with leftover scraps of wool, cotton and burlap, often torn from blankets and canvas, as these were more durable and attractive. The strips of material were plaited, then stitched together to form braided rugs. Because braiding was easy, large rugs could be produced quickly and served a utilitarian purpose. The most popular form was oval.

Braided rugs were affordable, practical and durable. In addition, they added warmth and color to a room. The making of braided rugs soon became a tradition that was passed down through generations of women. Girls learned to make rugs out of whatever was available -- coats, dresses, blankets, and suits.

Around the turn of the century, an innovative mechanized process turned continuous yarn into beautiful braided rugs. Then, in the later part of the 1900’s, there was a resurgence in the popularity of braided rugs. No longer a necessity, they were chosen to recreate the warm, cozy look of simpler times.

By the new millennium, the world was ready for something innovative. When Homespice Décor (formerly J Quilts) introduced the rectangle braid in 1999, the braided rug industry was revolutionized. While the oval braid was the classic, the new rectangle shape offered something new and fresh. Braided rugs, which had become old fashioned in the oval shape finally had something new, something that could look good with contemporary design as well as country décor.

Today, braided rugs remain a beautiful example of our heritage, with handmade braids a favorite among people who appreciate time-honored crafts

Warranty & Maintenance

Effective May 1, 2012, following warranty coverage is given.

Green World Rugs offer a six-month limited repair or replacement warranty to the initial purchaser (jute rugs).

Homespice Decor (Cotton Braided Rugs) and Ultra Durable offer a three year limited repair or replacement warranty to the initial purchaser.

The products will be free from manufacturing defects for the stated period dating from the date of delivery to the original seller.

Our products are designed to provide many years of use and enjoyment with
proper care and maintenance. Follow the rug maintenance protocol below to care for your rug to keep from voiding the warranty on your product.

Initial care
Roll marks or curling from shipping may appear in rugs. We recommend laying the rug flat and then rolling it in the opposite direction and let it sit for a short while and then unroll it again. Let it flatten out naturally. Work out any wrinkles using your hands or a cylinder (the tube the rug was rolled around works well for this.) The roll marks and wrinkling will work out over the course of a few days. It is best to let the rug lay on the floor without padding or without placing heavy items on it for 1-2 days to allow the rug to fully relax and return to its normal size and shape. This will help avoid pooling around furniture legs from occurring.

Turning, Rotation and Rug Pads
All rugs should be rotated and flipped several times a year to enhance their wear and reduce the effects of fading, matting or crushing.
To protect your investment,
use a rug pad. A rug pad provides traction between the rug and floor to prevent slipping. It adds padding and keeps the rug smooth and flat. Extending the life of the rug, a pad protects the backing and prevents any possible color transfer.

Vacuuming
Vacuum the rug regularly with the hard surface attachment of your vacuum

DO NOT USE A BEATER BRUSH - use just the vacumn

Spot Cleaning
Spills should be cleaned as soon as possible. Spot cleaning with a very mild non-chlorine detergent is recommended. For deep cleaning, seek a professional rug cleaner. When cleaning any of our rugs, air dry flat and flip as needed to allow the rug to fully dry on both sides. Do not place furniture or other heavy objects on the rug before it is completely dry on both sides.

Any attempt to clean your rugs with commercial water extraction, carpet shampoos or foam cleaners can damage your rug and is considered as voiding the warranty.  DO NOT use STANLEY STEAMER style cleaning companies.

Professional Cleaning / Washing the Rug when you need to clean the whole rug, we recommend professional cleaning, find people who pick up the rug and wash it at their facility, you can usually get names from oriental rug sellers. Though many people machine wash all the rugs, putting the rug in the washing machine or dryer will void the warranty and may damage your machine too.
Do not dry clean.

Some rugs such as River Point collection are machine washable and can be
washed in a front loaded machine in smaller rug sizes like 2x3’

Fading
Natural fiber and even many man-made fibers will fade after enough exposure to sunlight, heat, humidity and oxides.
Extend the life of your rug by rotating and flipping several times a year, especially if all or any part of the rug will be in direct sunlight for hours at a time each day. Ultra Durable rugs can stand 3000 hrs of direct sunlight.

Braided Rug Maintenance
Occasionally, “sprouts” will appear in your braided rug. These are a natural byproduct of the traditional method we use to make our braided rugs. Use a sharp pair of scissors and simply trim the sprout even with the rug surface.

Braided Rug Repair
Braided rugs are stitched together using extra strong thread. Should the threads become damaged or cut, the braids may start to separate. We recommend sewing the braids back together with a needle and thread immediately. If left unattended, this separation will certainly grow. To avoid braid separation, follow our recommended rug care practices of rotating and flipping the rug several times a year to avoid excess wear or pulling concentrated in one part of the rug. Use a rug pad to help provide cushioning, especially when furniture legs rest on the rug.
See our Return Policy on our website for directions in making a Warranty Claim as well as our rug care videos and tips at http://homespice.com

Repair and Replacement Warranty
Our limited repair or replacement warranty does not cover any damage from clips that may be used to suspend rugs on a display rack. We warrant to the initial purchaser (consumer) and original seller (dealer or retailer) our products will be free of manufacturing defects for a limited time from the date of delivery to the original (dealer or retailer).

This warranty does not cover certain conditions or characteristics such as those described above that may affect the rug’s appearance and performance over time. It does not cover fading, tears, sprouts, burns, cuts, pulls, or other damage, deterioration, stain, loss of color or appearance caused by abuse, or improper or inadequate maintenance. It does not cover rugs placed on ramps or any area regularly subjected to wheeled or rolling apparatus.

This warranty is limited to the actual repair or replacement. Homespice Décor’s total liability shall not exceed the invoice amount to the original seller. Homespice Décor is not responsible for bodily injury, property loss or damage, removal or relocation of furnishing, or any incidental or consequential damages or costs associated with repair or replacement
