An American Classic: The
2004 Historical Collection
Once
a year, Rowe Pottery Works introduces a new collection of
historical pottery that reflects the rich culture of generations
past. This year
is no exception. The Historical Collection 2004 Limited Edition
Series features hand-crafted designs influenced by early
American stoneware that combined practicality and beauty.
Although
created with techniques from the 1800's, this collection has a
certain ageless quality. The forms are hand thrown on the
potter's wheel, then decorations are hand brushed with a deep
cobalt blue. The pots are browned by wood ash vapor in the
firing to render an authentic aged look. The earthy texture and
rustic coloration are the distinctive markings of pottery fired
in a wood fueled kiln. Each piece will be stamped to this
collection and marked by both the potter and decorator. Step by
step, our artisans add individual characteristics until a
collectible is created. |
Because all of Rowe Pottery
products are handmade, you will not find the consistency of
machine made, production-line products. The size and shape of a
piece will vary and the individual decorator who creates your
piece will influence the pattern. Throwing ridges created by the
potter's hand as it turns on the wheel, brown flashings created
in the kiln where two pots "kiss" each other all add to the
character and uniqueness of your particular piece. These are
inherent traits of salt glaze stoneware and make each piece a
joy for you and generations to come.
The
finish on the Historical Collection varies from brownish to pale
grey. This is due to the firing process that is different
every time.
Early Americans cherished
their stoneware for its durability in oven and hearth. Crocks,
jars and jugs had to withstand daily use and perform equally
well in extreme hot and cold temperatures. Today we enjoy
authentic salt glaze for the same reasons. It's 100% food safe
and use it in the oven, microwave and is dishwasher safe. |

This form of pottery was often
referred to as a 'fancy' stoneware flask. Popular from 1820 to
