Salt Glaze (See Pieces Below)

Salt Glaze pottery is made using traditional techniques. The pieces are formed by wheel turning, slip casting, and hand building. The decorative designs are hand applied by slip trailing, brushing, or sgrafitto carving into the clay.

The gray and blue salt-glazed stoneware is produced as it was 500 years ago in Germany. Salt is introduced into the kiln above 2000 degrees Fahrenheit. This forms a sodium vapor that sticks to the clay and giving a glass coating on the pottery. This uncontrolled process makes each piece unique.

Pennsylvania Redware uses the German forming and decorating processes originally brought to Lancaster County. This pottery is fired to a temperature just under 2000° Fahrenheit. The lower temperature allows for a wider range of color and decorating styles. Unlike salt-glazed pottery, the Redware is glazed prior to placement into the kiln. The work is then fired high enough to melt the applied glaze to the clay.

 Please Note: All Hand Made Items Are Unique, pottery may vary in color, pattern, shape, size or other physical characteristics.  These are traits of hand craftsmanship, no two pieces made by hand can be exactly the same, these are signs of uniqueness and NOT defects.

Salt Glazed pottery will sometimes show brown spots which are iron particles that are natural to the clay, additionally a piece may show burn or scorch marks & stacking marks, even fingerprints from the salt firing in the kiln this is normal, the salt glaze pottery gets its name from the infusion of salt during the firing process.  Each piece gets different marks due to its location in the kiln or how it's stacked - these are marks of hand made items made in traditional methods and are characteristics of this style of pottery.
