La Familia Cruz. They are
a wonderful close knit family in which most of the family members are involved
with the business. The
grandparents are both from well known pottery families from Puente del
Arzobispo, Provence of Toledo, they married and continued their families
traditions together. The sons and son in laws throw the pottery and
grandmother, daughters and grand daughter paint the pieces. They are involved
in the process from beginning to end, literally digging the clay from the
ground and turning it into a beautiful, hand crafted, one of a kind pieces of
art. The tableware is hand shaped of rich terra cotta (barro) clay that has
been set out to dry in the brilliant Spanish sun. The pieces are fired in
excess of 2000 degrees producing a very durable product resistant to scratches
and chipping. It has been certified Lead and Cadmium free according to strict
EU regulations. The back rims of the plates and platters have holes that
allow for hanging. Many of our hanging flower pots also have loops.
This part of Spain has been the center of pottery making for centuries. Small
towns like Puente del Arzobispo and Talavera de la Reina are home to numerous
families of pottery makers that have continued their ancestor's trade with
pride and care. Each family has developed their own style and uniqueness
making them truly one of a kind and not mass produced.
