Redware pottery, made from red clay, was the first pottery made in Colonial America as early as 1625. The primitive pieces originally found at Jamestown Island, in the Virginia Colony are very collectible today. The simple pieces served as a functional, inexpensive ware to supplement their pewter and wooden commodities. 

Sgraffito redware involves adding slip, (a liquid whitish yellow clay), to the surface of the drying clay for decorations ranging from squiggle lines to depiction's of birds and flowers.
